Threats of Violence Target Teachers in Avignon School
April 29, 2025 – The prosecutor’s office in Avignon has been alerted following a series of threatening emails directed at teachers and staff members at the Grands Cyprès school located in the Rocade district. One of the messages references Samuel Paty, the history teacher murdered outside his Parisian school in October 2020.
According to France Bleu Vaucluse, multiple anonymous emails have been sent from different addresses to the headteacher and other staff members over several days. The threatening correspondence includes remarks such as « you are responsible for all of this », and « it’s going to be like Paty ». Messages were also written phonetically and mentioned issues of corruption and discrimination involving a particular student.
The threats have escalated, with one email warning that if certain pupils aren’t promoted to the next grade level, serious consequences will follow. Another message states: « I know your addresses » and « I’ll follow you home. » Additionally, there were suggestions about using weapons or knives against the staff members.
Following these alarming communications, a legal complaint was filed, and relevant state agencies have been activated to address the situation. The local police force has stepped up security around the school, deploying reinforcements at entrances and exits until further notice. Psychological support services have also been offered to affected educators.
The city’s deputy mayor for education, Claude Nahoum, expressed solidarity with the teaching staff during this distressing period: « No one will allow these matters to be left unresolved. »
Meanwhile, the regional education department guarantees that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone involved.
